Foxglove ✿ Flowers-cs

maximios Plants

FOXGLOVE is a plant that has for centuries been grown in gardens of many lands. They are members of the Figwort family. About 30 species are natives of Europe and western Asia. Some are biennials. Others are perennials. Only a few species are commonly cultivated. In North American gardens, the common or purple foxglove is the most important species. Its bell-like flowers usually grow in a stiff cluster on one side of the stalk. The flowers bloom in June and are two to three inches long. Their color may be white, lavender or deep purple, but most are purple-spotted. The stalk grows up to five feet tall, rising high above a cluster of large gray-green leaves near the ground.

The common foxglove grows wild in shady fields or roadsides in England and other parts of Europe. It grows wild in parts of temperate North America, most often on the Pacific Coast. Its old English name, Folks’ or Fairies’ Glove or Thimble, has been changed to foxglove. Its scientific name, Digitalis, is from the Latin word meaning “of or belonging to the finger.”

The name digitalis is given to a powerful drug, made from the leaves of the common foxglove. The value of the drug as a heart stimulant was discovered long ago in England. These leaves are poisonous to livestock.

Foxgloves are easy to grow if they have some shade the common foxglove is usually grown as a biennial. It is raised from seed planted outdoors in summer so the plants will bloom the following year. The young plants may need winter protection.

Perennial foxgloves are grown from seed or by root division. The flowers of perennial foxgloves are usually yellow.

Dandelion ✿ Flowers-cs

maximios Plants

DANDELION. The word dandelion comes from the French dent de lion, meaning lion’s tooth. This name was given to the plant because of the toothed margins of its leaves. When the leaves are young, they are used for healthful salad or as greens. The plant has medicinal value. Its roots, like those of its relative the chicory, are sometimes dried, roasted, ground, and mixed with coffee or used as substitute for it. For these reasons dandelions are cultivated to some extent, and a number of improved varieties have been developed. The wild dandelion, of which there are several species, is a native of Europe and Asia It has spread throughout all temperate regions, including the United States and southern Canada. Its golden-yellow flowers that brighten fields, waysides, and neglected lawns in spring are beloved of childhood. However, everyone who has the care of a good lawn dislikes this weed and does his best to get rid of it. This may be accomplished readily by treating the plants with sprays which kill the dandelions but do not injure the grass. The dandelion differs from most other plants in the way it reproduces. Its ovaries form fertile seeds without having to be pollinated (see Pollen).

Young dandelion leaves can be used in salads or they can be cooked. They taste best when they are young, before the plant has blossomed. Wine sometimes is made from the dandelion flowers.

In order to keep dandelion plants from growing on lawns, gardeners must cut deep into their roots. The roots grow to about 3 feet (91 centimeters) long in soft, rich earth. Slicing close under the surface only encourages the plants to grow. Gardeners sometimes spray dandelions with chemicals that destroy the dandelions but do not harm grass.

The flowers close at nightfall and remain closed on a dark day. After fertilization, the flower head closes and the fruit clusters develop. When the fruit is ripe, the head opens into a globe of parachuted fruits, which a puff of wind will scatter far and wide.

They have an abundance of thick, dark green foliage which makes them easy to arrange and useful in home decoration. Zinnias grow best if the seeds are planted indoors in March and are transplanted to a sunny spot when the weather is warm. In well-fertilized soil there will be an abundance of bloom from midsummer until frost. Dwarf and giant varieties have been developed which show a variety of unusual shapes and colors. The zinnia belongs to the Compositae family and grows wild from the southern United States and Mexico to Chile.

Botanical Garden ✿ Flowers-cs

Botanical garden

Botanical garden, (buh TAN uh kuhl), is a garden in which plants are grown chiefly for scientific, educational, and artistic purposes. Botanical gardens usually are part of an institution or other center of learning devoted to the study of plants. They often have courses for adults on the uses of plants. In some gardens, children may learn about plants from skilled teachers.

There are various types of botanical gardens (Types Of Flowers ) in the United States. For example, the New York Botanical Garden in New York City and the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis have year-round displays of plants from many parts of the world.

They must also have a thorough understanding of experimental procedures and of plant biology. Field botanists study plants in their natural habitat. This work requires a broad knowledge of plant taxonomy and ecology.

A bachelor’s degree is sufficient for some careers in botany, but most positions require a master’s degree. A doctor’s degree is required for advanced positions in research or to teach botany at a university. New jobs for botanists will continue to be created as the world’s population grows and scientists search for better ways to use plants for food and medicine.

What do botanists study?

Botanists focus on four broad areas in their research:

1) Plant classification.

2) How do the plants function.

3) Plant habitats.

4) The usage of plants.

Most botanical research involves more than one and sometimes all of these areas. In addition, each of the areas includes various specific fields of study. Because the plant kingdom is so diverse, most botanists focus on one or more specialized fields.

Plant classification and form provides the framework for almost all fields of botany. In studying a plant, a botanist must first know what type of plant it is. Botanists who specialize in systematic identify plant species. This field includes taxonomy, the science of naming and classifying plants. Botanists who specialize in morphology examine the form and structure of plants. Their research includes investigations of the cells and tissues that make up a plant’s internal structure.

How do the plants function. Plants must carry out a variety of activities to remain alive. Botanists specializing in physiology study the processes that enable plants to using an electron microscope, above, a botanist ‘studies minute features of a plant’s internal structure. The cells of a cabbage plant are visible in the photograph at the right. The cells are magnified about 50 times.

Grow and reproduce. These botanists examine how plants make and use food by photosynthesis, and how they obtain water, minerals, and nutrients from the soil. Much of their work focuses on the chemical processes that take place in the molecules in cells.

Botanists specializing in genetics study how plants pass characteristics on to their offspring through genes (hereditary material). Botanists studying molecular biology examine how genes affect plant form and function. They also study how genes may be altered to change plants or to create new plants through a process called genetic engineering.

Plant habitats are studied by botanists who specialize in ecology and geography. Plant ecologists study the relationship between plants and their environment. They also examine how plants interact with one another and with animals. Plant geographers study where plants live. They try to explain why certain plants grow in a particular region, but others do not.

Careers in botany

Botany offers a wide range of career opportunities. Most botanists work either for government agencies or for private industry as research scientists, laboratory technicians, or field botanists. Many technicians conduct agricultural or horticultural research and others develop new medicines from plants. These botanists must be skilled in the use of such sophisticated labora- many new types of plants and brought them to scholars to examine and identify. As a result, modern botany developed around such basic research areas as the classification of plants and the study of their form and function. These areas gradually expanded into many specialized fields as botanists focused on more specific aspects of plant life.

Over the centuries, scientists developed many different systems to classify plants. But most of these systems proved inadequate as knowledge about plants increased and new plants were found. During the mid-1700′s, the Swedish naturalist Carolus Linnaeus developed a system of naming plants that eventually became accepted as a standard classification system. Linnaeus used a binomial system of nomenclature, in which each plant has a unique name consisting of two parts.

Coreopsis plants grow as high as 4 feet (120 centimeters). They are commonly called tickseeds.

Coreopsis is the Greek word for bug. Most coreopsis plants are perennials and live for several years. But some are annuals and live only one season. A common annual coreopsis is often called calliopsis. Gardeners cultivate both perennial and annual coreopsis plants.

Scientific classification. Coreopsis plants form the genus Coreopsis in the composite family, Compositae. The scientific name for the calliopsis is C calliopsidea.

Larkspur ✿ Flowers-cs

maximios Plants

Larkspur is a favorite flower among gardeners. One of its petal like sepals is elongated into a spur, which resembles the spur of a lark’s back toe; hence the name larkspur. Because the unopened bud looks somewhat like a dolphin and because the Latin word for dolphin is delphinus, the flower is also called delphinium. The annual species larkspur and the perennial species delphinium. There are more than 150 species of larkspur growing wild in all parts of the world where the climate is mild. In addition there are over 1,000 cultivated varieties. The flowers of the most favored varieties are rather closely packed on tall spikes, often attaining a height of five or six feet. Each flower is made up of a single or double row of brightly colored sepals. Blue is the most common color, but purple, pink; white, scarlet, and yellow also occur. At the center of each flower are tiny fringelike petals, often covering the pistils and stamens. Inside the spur are two sacs filled with nectar which attracts bees and hummingbirds.Name is preferred by botanists. Many gardeners, however, like to divide these plants into two groups, calling the Larkspur is very easily cultivated. The plants grow best in deep, rich loam soil in places well exposed to the sun. Annual larkspur should usually be planted early in spring in the place where the plants are to bloom since they do not often with stand being transplanted. Perennial varieties however, are best started indoors in February or March and transplanted outdoors in April or May. The number of perennial plants in the garden can be increased by cuttings taken from plants that are already well grown. The tall graceful spikes blossom almost all summer.

Cyclamen ✿ Flowers-cs

maximios Plants

Cyclamen. The cyclamen grows wild in the Mediterranean regions of Europe, Asia, and northern Africa, where it blooms in early spring or late fall. When flower lovers discovered that cyclamens would thrive as potted plants, they were introduced into England and the United States, where they have become popular. They are among the most attractive of flowers blooming indoors in winter and spring.

The cyclamen is a member of the primrose family. It has a thick fleshy conn, which persists when the remainder of the plant becomes dormant. Hogs like the tubers of some species to eat. This accounts for the name sow bread given to the flower in southern Europe.

The blossoms are white, purple, red, clear shades of pink, or combinations of these colors. Under cultivation many large flowered types have been selected. They are of particular interest in that the petals are folded back along the flower stalk, giving the large flower an unusually light and graceful appearance. The leaves of the plant are large, heart-shaped, glossy, and frequently mottled light and dark green.

Pitcher plant ✿ Flowers-cs

maximios Plants

Pitcher plant is the name of a family of green plants with pitcher-shaped leaves that form traps for insects. Pitcher plants are called carnivorous plants because they feed on animal life (see Carnivorous plant), like other green plants, pitcher plants make their own food by a process called photosynthesis pitcher plants live in places where they get little nitrogen from the soil. The trapped insects provide nitrogen for the plants. These unusual plants have many local names. Among these names are sidesaddle sower, huntsman’s-cup, and Indian dipper. The common northern pitcher plant grows in marshes and swamps east of the Rocky Mountains from Labrador south to Florida. The lower edges of its leaves are folded together to form a tube, or pitcher. The top edges are left open to form the lid, or spout Rain water collects in these pitchers. Thick, bristly hairs grow at the mouth of each pitcher. These hairs all point downward and inward. Tiny honey glands cover the inner surface of the lid. The smell of the sweet juice attracts insects. Once the insect alights, the hairs prevent its leaving. It slides down to the base of the tube, where it drowns. After a while, the plant digests the insect. The globe-shaped flower of the pitcher plant grows singly on a long, slender stem. It is a deep reddish-purple color. The people of Newfoundland chose the pitcher plant as their provincial flower. A pitcher plant with yellow flowers grows in the Southern States. It has tall, erect, trumpet-shaped leaves. Another species of the pitcher plant, the cobra plant, native to California. Most insects caught by this plant are killed. However, a certain moth and a species of mosquito make their home in the pitcher.
